That was then 2008 – This is now 2025

In 2008, Shelter to Home was born, starting with one person who needed to furnish a room in a house. Highlands United Church Spirit Singers donated everything that was needed, including a recliner!

Back then, we only had clients from the North Shore Lookout Homeless Shelter, mostly single men we helped, one at a time. People only knew about our services through “word of mouth”. The furniture we gathered came mostly from Highlands United Church people and was stored in the garage of our founder. Household goods, from pots to pillowcases were in her guest room. Back then
Lookout Shelter bought a small trailer and the moves were done by Outreach workers. We started with 2 then 4 and then 6 volunteers who picked up donations on the North Shore and worked with clients. That was then.

Fast forward to 2025, many changes occurred over 17 years. Now we help around 200 people annually, more women and children than men. There has been a marked rise in the numbers of Seniors who need our services. We have a small warehouse in North Vancouver, where we house all our furniture and household donations. This location is also where our clients come to shop. Furniture and Household Donations are received from our North Shore community members. We also receive financial grants from North Van City and North Van District and Individuals from
the community which we are able to put towards the cost of our Warehouse Space. We use a local moving company to Pick up Donors donations as needed, and ask those donors to cover the cost of the pick up. We now have 20 volunteers doing a variety of jobs; answering the donation email/phone line,
working with clients, coordinating pick ups, sorting donations of household items and administration work. Our clients come to us by our local agencies, like Hollyburn Family Services, North Shore Crisis Center, North Shore Emergency Management to name a few. And yes we still work with NS Lookout Homeless
Shelter to this day. This is now.
